Horse Back Riding Lessons:
Members of our team take lessons at R. Stewart’s Hunter and Jumpers. Rob Stewart the owner and trainer holds lessons Monday through Friday at 4:15, 5:30 and 7:00pm. You do not need your own horse to have lessons! Rob graciously provides our team with his school horses. While having your lesson, Rob will match each rider with an appropriate horse, which is determined by the students riding experience and ability. For those on the WMU Hunt Seat Equestrian Team, we get a discounted lesson price of 25$. There are also private lessons available every Friday, if interested you may talk to Rob about them.
The barn is located in Hickory Corners, Michigan, about a 35 minute drive from campus. If you don’t have your own car, it’s no problem! As a team we attempt to carpool and plan lessons together as much as possible. To participate in a lesson at R. Stewart Hunter and Jumpers, you need the appropriate riding equipment. It is required that you wear long pants (jeans or breeches), closed toed riding shoes (paddock boots or other riding boots) and a helmet. There are some school helmets provided at the barn, however, we recommend that if you don’t have your own helmet to purchase one. In the long run it’s beneficial to your lesson and showing experience.
IHSA Horse Shows:
The WMU Hunt Seat Equestrian Team competes in the IHSA (Intercollegiate Horse Show Association) all school year. We compete against twelve other Michigan and Canadian teams like, University of Michigan, Michigan State University, Grand Valley State University, and the University of Western Ontario. To shown the IHSA you do not need your own horse. When a school hosts an IHSA show, they also provide the horses, so all you need to bring is yourself and your show clothes. Don’t worry if you think you’re not experienced enough to show, there are classes anywhere from, Walk-Trot to Open Over Fences. For those team members who would like to show, it’s a great opportunity to show at different facilities throughout Michigan and Canada. More information about the IHSA can be found at www.ihsainc.com and www.campusequestrian.com, or by contacting us.
If you want to become a member of the WMU Hunt Seat Equestrian Team, even though we want everyone to show, you don’t have to. Some members of the team do not show due to availability and time, however, they still attend team events and shows to help support the team. As a team we love social members, and we want everyone to be able to join the team even if they are unable to show!
